Teacher: Dear friends! Today we’ll have an unusual lesson about fashion. Fashion plays a great role in your life. You want to be attractive and your clothes accentuate your individuality. But to be really attractive and well-mannered you should know when and where to wear this style or these clothes. So, today we have different combinations of clothes and style for different events in your life to show. We are going to start with the history of the 20 – th Century fashion in brief.
2. Развитие монологической и диалогической речи учащихся. Основная часть урока.
P1: Before the First World War fashions didn’t change very quickly. Men wore dark suit. They had short hair and moustaches were popular. Women wore long dresses and they had long hair.
P2: In the Roaring Twenties dresses and hair became much shorter. People saw women’s knees for the first time. A straight figure with no waist was fashionable. For men trousers with very wide legs became fashionable. They were called Oxford bags.
P3: In the 1930 and 40s hair, dresses and coats became longer again. Men’s fashion didn’t change very much. Men wore a suit, a tie and usually a hat, too. Moustaches were less popular.
P4: In the 1950s people were richer and teenagers spent a lot of money on clothes. For men this was age of the Teddy boy. Teddy boys wore long jackets in very bright colours – pink, orange or yellow – and very tight trousers. For women jumpers and blouses with wide skirts and short socks were the fashion. Both men and women wore shoes with long pointed toes. The women’s shoes had high stiletto heels.
P5: The 1960s saw a revolution in clothes. Everything changed. This was the time of the mini – skirt and long boots. Man had long hair – the famous Beatles haircut.
P6: In the late 1960s and early 70s the “flower power” style was in. Women were loose maxi – skirts. Men wore jeans and brightly colored shirts or T-shirts. Clothes were very colorful. Very long hair was fashionable for men and women and beards more common.
P7: The 80s brought teenagers with punk hair styles in red, blue, purple and green and brightly colored make up.
Teacher: Thank you for this useful information. And now listen to students about the history of Business Costume which is an official style in any Russian school.
P8: In 1870th the clothes of men’s fashion from Great Britain came to women’s wardrobes. It was a costume, practical and firm and it became a favourite sort of clothes among progressive business women. We have followed this style from that time. In general, it is a combination of jacket and trousers, a jacket and a skirt or a waist-coat and trousers or skirt. These clothes are comfortable and serve your movements, habits or a gait. They show discipline, strictness and freedom at the same time. The lines are calm, the colour and drawing are of great importance. Business clothes mustn’t be boring. Clean, light and delicate colours are all right. You may use stripped, smooth and relief fabric for your costume. A white or light blouse or shirt will always decorate your business costume for a special event or a visit.
P1: - Have a look at these modern suits. Do you like them?
P2: - Yes, I do. They are very intelligent.
Teacher: America has created its own type of clothing, which is now popular all over the world. The best invention is jeans, which have become an icon of American culture (музыка, показ одежды).
P9: Blue jeans where a by-product of the Gold Rush. The man, who invented jeans Levi Strauss, emigrated from Germany to San Francisco in 1850. Levi was 20years old and he decided to sell clothes to the miners in California. When he was told that durable trousers were the most needed item of clothing, Levi began making jeans of heavy tent canvas. Levi’s jeans were an immediate success. Soon he bought a fabric that was softer then canvas from Nimes a city in France. The miners liked this fabric. They called it “denim”. Strauss dyed the denim blue. Today the company he started is known all over the word.
P10: The next invention is T-shirts. They started off as underwear. During the First World War European soldiers wore them underneath their uniforms to keep warm. American troops copied the idea and started calling them “T-shirts” because of their T shape. In the mid 50s actor James Dean and rock star Elvis Presley shocked the world by wearing their T-shirts on TV. It was too much for young people to ignore. Everyone wanted to look like James Dean and Elvis Presley. Today T-shirts are worn by babies, kids, teenagers, adults.
P11: All my classmates say that I’m trendy. I enjoy wearing stylish clothes. I like to look smart and attractive. We can’t go through life with the same hairstyle. I prefer casual things: jeans, T-shirts, sweaters. Sometimes I turn up in something extravagant. When you are up with fashion you feel you are an individual. At the same time don’t worry about your jeans when the others are dressed up at the party and all quests will think that it is normal.
Teacher: What about shoes? Are there any fashionable?
P12: What is expensive and good for your feet? Trainers, of course. Trainers are not like other shoes. Good trainers stay with the natural shape of your feet. Doctors say it’s good for your feet to wear no shoes at all. Parents have been complaining about the cost of their children’s shoes. Teenagers don’t want to buy ordinary trainers from shoe shops now. Everyone wants to buy “designer trainers”. The most popular trainer companies in Britain are Nike, Reebok, LA Bear, Puma and Hi-tech. Now, with new technologies, trainers are stronger, lighter, and more comfortable. They help you with your sport.
P3: - Hi. Can I help you?
P4: - Yeah, please. I like these trainers, but have you got them in blue?
P3: - Yes, they are quite nice, aren’t they?
P4: - Wait a minute, I’ll check. What size?
P4: - Well, in Russia I take a 43, so I think that’s a 9 here, isn’t it?
P3: - That’s about right. You are in luck. The last pair in blue is your size. Do you want to try them on?
P4: - Yes, please.
P3: - How do they fell?
P4: - Fine, thanks. And they look all right, don’t they?
P3: - They suit you very well.
P4: - Ok, I’ll take them.
P3: - Good. Will you come with me to the cash desk?
Teacher: So, teenagers prefer sport style to feel comfortable in any place. They don’t like formal clothes. Sometimes they forget that an official style is normal at work, at school or college on the one hand and high fashion is demanded at the parties on the other hand. Let’s talk about high fashion in Russia. (музыка)
P13: Look at photo.
This man has got international recognition in the haute couture world. His name is Valentin Yudashkin. In one of his press releases he said about his roots: “I am terribly Russian. I am constantly trying to make the beauty of Russian culture, the Russian soul is known through my creations”. He was born near Moscow in 1963. In Russia he showed his first collection in 1987. In 1991 he began doing haute couture runway shows in Paris. His first Paris collection was called “Faberge” (1991). This was followed by “Music” (1992), “Still Life” (1993), “Frescos” (1994), “Catherine the Great” (1994) and “Ballet” (1995). The collection entitled “Bridges of Paradise” is one of the collections created in the end of the 20th century. Many of his collections were inspired by the music of Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, Glinka. Nearly all his life he has been studying the Russian costume. He opens his couture house in Moscow in 1993. His clients are mainly from the theatre and music world, businessmen and scientists. In 1997 Yudashkin became the member of the French fashion governing body. He said: “I am Russian, but the capital of fashion is Paris”.
So you see, our country is rich in talented people.
I want to tell you about more style which is very special. Look at this picture with a young woman dressed in a shocking way to express his individuality.
She has brightly coloured hair and wears metal chains. Her manners of clothing expresses protest against society. Their music is aggressive. They reject everything.
Teacher: Is this fashion unpleasant?
P1 - P14: Yes, it is.
Teacher: How it is called?
P1: It’s a punk style came from hippies and punks.
Teacher: Can they work in an office, company, plant or can they attend classes?
P2: No, they can’t. I think it’s a street style.
Teacher: Thank you. Well now you can differ one style from the other and you know exactly what sort of your clothes you should wear in this or that situation. If you like sport suits it doesn’t mean that you should wear them during your lessons. Try to put them on for your rest time or when you go in for sport. Then you will be attractive and well – mannered.
Our lesson is over. Thank you for your active work at the lesson. You will have 5s and 4s for today. Good luck.
